After an introduction highlighting street photography and renowned street photographers throughout history, you’ll head out into the museum’s surroundings to capture that perfect moment—a chance encounter with a passerby immortalized in a compelling image.
Hey, you there! These legendary words were often uttered by one of the most famous Dutch (street) photographers, Ed van der Elsken. With this direct approach, he frequently persuaded passersby to look into his camera lens, creating engaging and intimate photographs. However, this bold style doesn’t suit everyone. Some street photographers adopt a more observational method, resulting in more detached and reflective images.
Following an introduction by the museum educator, where street photography, notable photographers, and their techniques are discussed, you will visit the exhibition Gallery of Honor of Dutch Photography. Here, several iconic street photographs will be highlighted. Together, you’ll explore what makes a good street photograph truly captivating.
Afterward, you’ll venture out yourself to experience what it’s like to be a street photographer and discover which style suits you best. In your search for that one moment that captures the passerby in an exciting frame, elements such as humor, the unexpected, and the environment often play a crucial role. Once back at the museum, you will present your best images and learn to critically evaluate both your work and that of your peers.
